Our football club has certainly experienced its fair share of ups and downs, triumphs and defeats in the last 40 years. Nevertheless, we still take pride in wearing the brown and gold each week and representing the club.
The origins of our club trace back to 1976 where a meeting was held at the Hackham Hall with the SFL to discuss forming a football club and its colours. At the meeting, which was open to the community, coaches were appointed, along with senior players, U13's and U15's combined with Aldinga.
In 1977 the team held its very first training session at Hackham East Primary School with cars parked around the ground with their headlights on. Lights were later donated to facilitate training. Many of the early home games were played at Aldinga, with a hose put through a window for a shower. However, this didn’t worry the team that, after eight rounds, were undefeated and ended up finishing minor premiers only to be knocked out in the preliminary final. Construction of the Hackham complex began in 1978, which meant the team had to train at the Christies Beach High School. The young club continued to grow as a club and gain more momentum, as the A grade made it to the the Grand Final, but went down by only a few points.
In 1980, Hackham finally experienced ultimate success, as the years of hard work and disappointment that came before, saw the first Premiership come to the club with the Division 2 reserves Premiership and a flag in 1983 with Division 2 U14s. In 1986, the club's centenary year, further success was experienced with Premierships in Division 1 U13s, 16s and 18s. In the 1987 season, Hackham won Premierships with the Division 2 U16s and an undefeated flag in the U14s.
The 1990 season saw further success, with each of Hackham's A grade and reserves delivering the club two more Premierships, followed by back-to-back flags in the reserves in 1991. In 1996, the Division 1 reserves were again undefeated Premiers, and the Division1 U16s won another flag.
Times have changed since the club's entry into the Southern Football League. The club is facing challenges on and off the field in the modern game; however, these obstacles are approached with the same guts and determination that proved effective in the early years. The Hackham Football Club aims to remain a strong contributor in the local community, with the licensee of the club rooms, oval and facilities, including the children's playground. Our doors are always open to new comers and welcome the contribution of new players and volunteers.
